How to Memorize Spanish Verb Conjugations Without Burning Out
Brute-force memorization fails. The students who actually retain conjugations use three things: chunking, spaced repetition, and daily output practice.
Quick answer
Memorize regular -AR, -ER, -IR endings as one chart. Add 10 high-frequency irregulars. Use spaced repetition daily. Practice output, not just recognition.
Step 1 — Chunk the regular endings
- -AR: o, as, a, amos, áis, an
- -ER: o, es, e, emos, éis, en
- -IR: o, es, e, imos, ís, en
Step 2 — The 10 most useful irregulars
ser, estar, ir, tener, hacer, poder, querer, decir, ver, dar. Native speakers use these constantly.
Tip: Lock in present tense first. Then preterite. Then imperfect.
Step 3 — Spaced repetition
Anki, Quizlet, or SpanishCorner show you a card right before you’d forget it. Aim for 10 min/day.
Step 4 — Output practice
Recognition isn’t recall. Write 5 sentences/day. Or use language exchange.
Common mistakes
- Memorizing tenses for verbs you never use.
- Only doing flashcards without writing or speaking.
- Cramming instead of 10 min/day for 4 weeks.
