The Complete ACT Prep Roadmap (2026)

A start-to-finish guide for preparing for the ACT. Covers section breakdown, timing, study plan, and the best resources.

Quick answer

The ACT is 2 hours 55 minutes (3 hours 35 with Writing). Four required sections: English (45 min, 75 questions), Math (60 min, 60 questions), Reading (35 min, 40 questions), Science (35 min, 40 questions). Optional Writing essay (40 min). Composite score 1-36.

How the ACT differs from the SAT

  • ACT is faster — less time per question.
  • ACT has a Science section (more chart/data interpretation than science knowledge).
  • ACT Math allows any calculator.
  • SAT is section-adaptive; ACT is fixed.

Section-by-section strategy

English (45 min, 75 questions)

The English section tests grammar, punctuation, and rhetoric. The fastest method:

  • Read just enough to answer the question – don’t read the whole passage first.
  • Trust “no change” – it’s right ~25% of the time.
  • Shorter answers are usually right (when grammar is correct).

Math (60 min, 60 questions)

ACT Math covers Pre-Algebra, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Plane Geometry, and Trigonometry. Use plug-and-check liberally. Calculator is allowed throughout – bring one you’re comfortable with.

Reading (35 min, 40 questions)

Four passages: prose fiction, social science, humanities, natural science. Same approach as SAT Reading – read the question first, skim for the answer, match.

Science (35 min, 40 questions)

The Science section is really data interpretation, not science knowledge. Three passage types: Data Representation, Research Summaries, Conflicting Viewpoints. Skim charts and graphs; answer specific questions.

Tutoring tip: the Science section feels intimidating but rewards careful chart reading. You don’t need to know biology or chemistry facts.

12-week ACT study plan

  1. Weeks 1-2: diagnostic full test, identify weakest section.
  2. Weeks 3-6: drill weak section 30 min/day.
  3. Weeks 7-10: one timed section per week + daily 20-question drills.
  4. Weeks 11-12: two full timed practice tests, review error log.
