How to Help Your Kid with Algebra (Even If You Forgot It)

How to Help Your Kid with Algebra (Even If You Forgot It)

By Mr. Neal · Tutor Corner LLC · Founder & Certified Teacher

Your kid comes home with algebra homework. You haven’t solved for x since the Reagan administration. Here’s how to be useful without re-learning algebra yourself.

Step 1: Don’t pretend you remember

If you fake your way through it, your kid will catch it and lose trust. Better: \”I haven’t done this in years. Let’s figure it out together — show me what you’ve tried.\” Models that not knowing is okay — which is the whole battle.

Step 2: Have them explain it to you

This is the secret weapon. The act of explaining is how you learn. Don’t solve it for them. Ask: \”What does this problem want?\”, \”What’s the first step?\”, \”How would you check if your answer is right?\” They will teach themselves, with your patience.

Step 3: Use free tools when you’re both stuck

 • Photomath (app) — snap a photo of the problem, see step-by-step solution
 • Wolfram Alpha (free) — same thing on a computer
 • Khan Academy — free 5-minute videos on every topic
 • Our Worksite — Desmos + GeoGebra for visualizing

Step 4: Know when to call in help

If they’re consistently struggling for more than 2-3 weeks on the same concept, or if they’re starting to say things like \”I’m just bad at math,\” it’s tutor time. A few sessions with a real teacher fixes problems that hours of YouTube can’t.

Common algebra concepts your kid will hit

 • Solving for x (one variable, then multiple)
 • Linear equations and slopes
 • Factoring (the gateway to everything)
 • Quadratics
 • Functions and function notation
 • Exponent rules
