How to Stay Focused While Studying — Tips That Work
Staying focused while studying is a skill, not a personality trait. Here’s the routine I share with my tutoring students who struggle with distraction.
The 25-minute focus routine (Pomodoro Technique)
Set a timer for 25 minutes. Do one thing the whole time — read the chapter, work the problem set, write the essay. When the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break (stand up, water, walk around). Repeat.
After 4 rounds (~2 hours), take a longer 20-30 minute break.
Set up your space (5-minute fix)
- Phone face-down or in another room. The biggest single change.
- One task at a time — close other browser tabs
- Water + a snack ready so you don’t leave to get one
- Same spot every time — your brain associates the space with focused work
What to do when your mind wanders
It will. That’s normal. The skill isn’t never getting distracted — it’s noticing fast and returning faster.
- Catch yourself thinking about something else
- Don’t judge it — just notice
- Gently return to the task
- Don’t restart the timer
If 25 minutes feels long, start with 10
Most students who say “I can’t focus” can absolutely focus for 10 minutes. Start there. Build up over a week or two. 10 → 15 → 20 → 25.
Common things that look like focus problems but aren’t
- Not understanding the material — your brain checks out because it can’t process. Fix the gap, focus returns.
- Tired — sleep is the easiest study tool no one uses
- Hungry — protein + slow carbs sustain attention better than sugar
- Doing too many subjects in one sitting — switch every 90 minutes max
