How to Use Khan Academy Effectively
Khan Academy is the best free educational resource in the world. But most students use 10% of what it offers. Here’s how to use it well.
Quick answer
(1) Take the diagnostic to find your level. (2) Follow the structured path, not random videos. (3) Mastery practice the topics until you hit 4 lights (mastered). (4) Use unit tests to confirm. (5) Combine with active note-taking, not passive watching.
1. Take the diagnostic
Khan Academy’s Mission feature places you at your actual level. Don’t skip ahead. Don’t go back further than you need.
2. Follow the structured path
Each course has a recommended order. Following it builds knowledge correctly. Jumping around leaves gaps.
3. Use mastery practice
Practice topics until you get to “Mastered” (4 lights). The system uses spaced repetition to keep them mastered. Don’t stop at “Familiar” or “Proficient.”
4. Take unit tests at the end
Unit tests show whether you’ve actually learned the unit. Anything you miss tells you what to drill.
5. Take notes during videos
Don’t just watch. Pause, write down the key idea, then continue. Passive watching = forgotten in 24 hours.
